Ways We Choose Books
At AMS, your child is encouraged to select novels that he/she will enjoy reading. Here are some guidelines that we suggest:
- Read the front cover and the inside of the jacket
- Read the back cover
- Choose books with characters they’ve read about in other books
- Choose another book in a series
- Choose a book with an interesting title
- Look for a book with great illustrations
- Become familiar with authors they know and like
- Listen for book recommendations from teachers, friends, and critics
- Read books that are movies
- Choose from a genre that they like to read (genre=historical fiction, science fiction, poetry, biography etc. )
- Preview the beginning
- Read some of the middle
- Check out the “must read” rack in the classroom
- Find a new or popular book
- Read a sequel to a book they have read
- Read a book that was heard as a read aloud
- Re-read a book that was enjoyed in the past
- Five finger rule (Open the book to a random page. Begin reading. If there are five words that are difficult to pronounce, or if they don’t know the meaning, it is too hard. Put the book back and try a different selection)
